Drewps Guitars contacted me a few months ago to create a Custom Guitar of my choice and design. It was an honor to be asked, these guys are seriously talented and they are one of the only South African guitar makers out there! We immediately dived into ideas for the theme and design. After giving it much thought, I came up with an "Alice in Wonderland" theme. The song Clarity was loosely based on the book by Lewis Caroll and I had just come back from New York where there is an incredible bronze statue in homage to the imaginative world he invented in Wonderland - so it was on my mind at the time.
I decided the type of guitar I wanted was a Baritone Acoustic Guitar, these are amazing instruments. They have the exact same chord shapes as a normal guitar but at a much lower register. I wanted to try to write songs in a different key and this instrument is the perfect tool for this.
Paul Schmidt, the owner and creative force behind the company, sent me a number of design sketches which were very interesting. Eventually we decided what direction we wanted to take it, aesthetically, and he got started. He is currently working on it as we speak. Here are a few images of the design and workshopping process. The guitar should be ready in a few weeks. I'm very excited to strum the first chords on it. Check out the complex process involved in making a guitar by hand:
